Fairfield field hockey bounced back from a 3-2 loss to Lock Haven on Saturday by winning a one-goal game of its own: a 1-0 victory over Cornell on Sunday afternoon at University Field.
"We needed a win today after a hard loss yesterday against Lock Haven", said senior Molly Burns.
The win improves Fairfield's overall record on the season to 3-8, and also provides a much-needed boost to a team that had lost seven of its previous eight games.
Fairfield senior Emily Janis scored the only goal of the game in the beginning of the second half.
Amy Hosking '09 started the play with a pass to Katherine Donovan '10 at the top of the circle. Donovan stopped the ball and Janis took the penalty. Janis then scored on the ensuing play.
The game-winning goal was Janis' fifth goal this season.
The victory over Cornell is especially important for a team desperately looking to build confidence heading into its conference games.
"We haven't even started our America East Conference [schedule] yet," Burns said.
Sarah Borton '10 added, "This is just our warm-up".
Following the team' final out-of-conference game against Brown, the Stags face Vermont in the team's first America East game.
Jim Zappone, father of Fairfield's assistant coach Kara Zappone, feels the team is more thanprepared.
"They have been playing real well. Statistically, they should be undefeated right now."
