Extreme bowling. The spring concert. The mall  and movie shuttles.

Each year, the Fairfield University Student Association (FUSA) strives to provide Fairfield students with various activities and events like these that add to the overall college experience and work to get students involved and active on campus.

One of the most popular events offered by FUSA is the Broadway Show series. FUSA Executive Director of Programming Meg Doyle '09 said that the association offers tickets at a reduced price of $40 which includes a bus ride to and from the city and entry to the show.

This year, the first show that FUSA sold tickets to was 'In the Heights' scheduled on Sept. 18.

"The shows are monthly, always on Thursdays and they are always at 8 p.m." She added, "The bus drops students off at around six and the students have the opportunity to go grab food and shop until the show starts and then the bus picks students up outside the theater after the show," said Doyle. "So students who know how much Broadway tickets normally are understand that they are getting a good deal."

Margo Priaulx '12 said she loves the idea behind these FUSA events. "Since I don't have a car it's a good way for me and my friends to get off campus and travel a little," she said.
"I also love Broadway shows and the price of a cheap ticket is around $60 so to see a show for $40 and also have transportation is a really good deal," she added.

"The shows are popular and up to date, so it's something that students really want to go to!" said Priaulx.

Jen Gilbert '10 thinks that the FUSA Broadway Shows are a great opportunity to give students a cultural experience and relax with a trip to the city.

"I love to spend time in the city and the prices are so great, who wouldn't want to go!" she added, "But I'm busy during the week a lot so it would be better for me if they were also on some weekends and not just on Thursdays or other weekdays."

Dani Griswold '10 agreed, "I like the idea of them but the way FUSA schedules the times, it is hard for athletes to attend who wish to.

"And because they are only on Thursdays, students who regularly have tests on Fridays find it hard to go because they need to use that time to study."

FUSA Senator Mike Bennett '10 thinks that, "the shows provide a way for students to have some fun and learn outside the classroom because the Broadway shows are not only entertaining but they can also be culturally enriching."

He added that it may be a good idea to open the shows up to not only Broadway shows but also operas and other theatrical events.

Opening the shows up to other theatrical performances could allow people who can't attend the shows on Thursdays to be able to.

However, overall, Meg Doyle said, "along with Extreme Bowling, its one of the events where we get a lot of student turnout. And it's not just freshmen, but its every year."
It seems that there are high hopes in the air for this year's Broadway show series.

With tickets selling out in a matter of hours, FUSA has showed that students really do like and appreciate the opportunity to escape from the pressures of campus and see a show with some friends.

This semester the monthly shows include 'Young Frankensteins' in October, 'Phantom of the Opera' in November and 'The Radio City Christmas Spectacular' in December, all available to students at a discounted price.
